Hi there,

My setup is the NEC 3500 DVD Burner oem connected via a USB/Firewire Enclosure.
What should be the fastest speed I can burn DVD's?

At this moment that there are no 16X media available go for 8X recordings.

Thanks for your reply...

The reason for my question is down to the fact that I'm using the USB/Firewire enclosure.
Currently the fastest I can burn a DVD at is 4x. I'm guessing this is because of the connection speed.

Is this a correct assumption on my part?

i have 3500a, firmware flashed and usb 2.0 ext. case. I can burn at 8x with Ritek 4x DVD+R with no problem. I think that's max for usb 2 burning/transfer speed anyways.
However, ripping, i can only get 3900kbp max ??

What media have you tried?

USB2.0 has a transfer rate up to 480Mbit/sec which is approximately 60MB/sec. Normaly you can burn at 16X, which is not recommented. As for the ripping speed it should be a little higher.

Iggy, if ripping speed of 3900 kbs is low, to be in the ballpark, what should it be?
Also, do you know of anything that might hinder the ripping speed? I'm ripping it on an IBM T42 thinkpad (laptop) with 1.7M GHz. with 1GB memory. During ripping, it only uses about 50% of the CPU so I don't think it's the system resources problem.
