The new Plextor 716A looks like a great drive on paper. It's nice to see the -R catching up to the +R in terms of burning speed. I wonder if the drive will be able to write to quality -R media in an overclocking fashion as there is no 16x -R media out yet. That would be a clear advantage to the Plextor drive.

How about 8X DVD+RW and support for DVD-R DL with future firmware upgrade?

The new Q-Check TA analyze functions do look very nice

Hey Emperor, when do you think we will see a "Review" of this new drive by PLEXTOR??? Plextor has suggested that the drive will cost about $135.00 US! Not a bad price to start at considering previous starting prices!

It sounds like an excellent drive, however I would like to see tests of it before any further conclusions.

Also, Emperor I really miss the old forums way of listing drives by NAMES, like Plextor, LiteOn, etc!!! Personally I think it was better.

It's hard to tell from those little thumbnail pictures what Q-check is doing, but it looks cool. I doubt I'll have any use for DVD+RW at 8x as I don't trust rewritable media for backups since most of my cd-rw's went bad. If it's worth keeping, it's worth using a write once disc.

At $135, this drive would be a bargain, however, I personally doubt it will come in at that price. I'm sure it will be more than $150.

There really is no point in Plextor reviewing their own drive. They would only say how wonderful it is. The review here at cdrinfo.com will reveal the shortcomings of the drive.

Of course we will review the drive as soon as it arrives, as for the Q-Check TA, its a function found at Pro testing equipement and related to Jitter measurements ( i think so), i guess we will found out more when the drive arrives...

I hope the new announced specs and features will work as supposed to be...

I called Plextor and talked to tech manager,
spent 20 mins, this is the one for me.
Always owned nothing but Plextor, this one is a winner too.
Great features, great service and reliability.

Plextor Corp. has announced a new dual-layer, dual-format DVD burner that takes burn speeds up to 16X.

The Plextor PX-716 CD/DVD burner offers fast 16X CAV performance on recommended 8X DVD+R media, and burns a 4.7GB DVD in less than six minutes. The drive features 16X DVD+R and 16X DVD-R recording.
The Plextor PX-716 drive is scheduled for shipment to distributors and resellers in North and South America on October 15, 2004, the company said. The internal PX-716A drive will retail for a suggested price of $149.00, while an external USB/IEEE 1394 PX-716UF unit will cost $239.00.
The drive features a range of new features, including "AutoStrategy,", a technology that determines the standard deviation of any blank disc and automatically optimizes the write strategy for unknown media. "Lossless Linking/Zero Link" technology enables users to perform basic editing tasks directly on the DVD disc, so there is no need to reload DVD content back to a PC to make minor changes, and no need to re-burn an entire DVD after making small edits, Plextor said.
"Plextor constantly develops and introduces features that differentiate our DVD and CD drives from competitive products," said Howard Wing, vice president of sales and marketing for Plextor, in a statement. "The combination of Taiyo Yuden AutoStrategy technology and Plextor's proven expertise of high-quality disc recording has yielded outstanding results. We have successfully demonstrated that the PX-716 with AutoStrategy is capable of providing high-quality writing over a broad spectrum of media."
A short drive length of 6.7-inches will allow the PX-716 drive to accomodate small-form-factor PCs, the company said.

The only person I *KNOW* has one is Craig Campbell of Ahead.de, who also confirmed the first known coaster created by the PX-716a

So far, that's the only info I'm aware of for the PX-716a, but I'm sure test units will be sent soon
