Hi all thanks for all the help again, I just bought my 1st DVD burner! NEC 3500AG (C$105 + 14.5% or US$94). It came as v2.16 so I promptly flashed it to v2.08.

Getting it to work via 1394 was a bitch tho

. Did dozens of power on/off & plug/unplug 1394 cable. XP only detected the device about 10% of the time.

If anyone is in the same boat, the fix is to flash the Oxford 911 chipset firmware to Jul03 v3.8, and also must apply some tweaks. I bought the 2 enclosures last week but they came with Jan03 v3.7 firmware. I also applied an XP 1394 patch which I think made it worse. My 1394 HD Tach avg read dropped from 32MB/s to 28MB/s. BTW USB2 measured 26.5MB/s for these enclosures.

Paid C$60 + 14.5% or US$54 for 50 TYG02 at NCIX. Hope these are real.

I also have some old Maxell MXL RG02 lying around. Once I figure out how to burn DVDs I'll know how the 3500 performs via an enclosure.

I can personally guarentee that the Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD±Rs at NCIX.com are 100% real Taiyo Yuden products

I'm sure you'll find them to your liking!

I have a question on the Review. When you reviewed Pioneer 108 you guys put "Doesn't support DVD-ROM booktype for DVD+R/+RW formats" in bad and made no note about firmware, but in NEC review you said in the Like to Be Fixed part "Official firmware release to support booktype setting for +R/+RW media"

so you saying NEC will add the support and Pioneer wont?

Thx Dolphin. I actually got the TY there based on your msg on another thread.

I went to their Broadway store & when I asked the sales guy if their TYs are real he said he had no idea & said he just got the -R (no 8x +R in stock) from some supplier. Also said those are on sale & is no return or exchange. Made it sound like a fly by night con job...lol...

I believe this is mentioned this way because NEC supported booktype with unofficial firmwares while Pioneer not.

pioneer was never fond of +R format, so it is more likely that we will never see an official tool/firmware to support bitsetting for SL media. NEC will probably release one first

Hi,

I read the review from CDRInfo and I didn't understand NEC's firmware numbering... why is 2.07 a more recent version than 2.16? Does it have to do with it not being a final version?

Oh, and by the way, where can I download official firmware for the 3500AG drive? I tried to find anything on their website, but unfortunately I wasn't able to find it.

Pioneer x08 have no Single Layer bitsetting.
NEC 3500 have SL bitsetting only with a clone firmware (Mad Dog drive or TDK = NEC 3500 rebadged).

It was already discussed several time : 2.xy where x = manufacturer/rebadger (1=NEC, F=MadDog...) and y = version

PS : there is no official upgrade for the 3500 @ NEC site at the moment.

offtopic, sorry but: in Germany we say "Ehre, wem Ehre gebührt!", which means the same. can anybody please tell us, what this means in Croatian? Or Russian?

the official fw is coming from my country, because, nec offers no support for the states, cause they're only selling oem-drives there! but you can use this fw without compunctions!
