NEC recently joined the 16X DVD recording race with the introduction of their latest drive, the ND-3500A. After the big success of the ND-25x0 series, which was indeed a very good quality writer, the new ND model aims to take its place in the market, offering the highest recording speed available for all media formats. The ND3500A delivers even higher write and re-write speed functions than its predecessor, the ND2510.

It seems that NEC drives are to popular. In my opinion there are not too many drives, good as NEC, to talk about.

Personaly I own a Philips but I was also expecting the review to come out to see if it is as good as they said to buy one.

thanks for the review! :) it has helped to finalise my decision in purchasing one of these.

hopefully, the firmware updates will be steady (more media support) & stable (to actually USE the new media supported!).

now, if only +DL media was both more available and cheaper...

Page 23 says that the default booktype for DVD+RW is DVD-ROM.
Are you sure this correct?

Interesting :
"The main chipsets come from NEC, with part numbers NEC D63635GM and NEC C333500. The same chipsets are used in the TDK 1616N, the Pioneer DVR-108 and ASUS DRW-1604P."
TDK is a known clone but this info confirms that the Pioneer x08 is a NEC "cousin" (not a clone though).

And the fact that some hacked firmwares burns DVD+R DL Ritek discs @4x and some @ 2.4x...
(DL 2.4X burn quality is better than 4X ! So I can keep my 2510 for a while...)

Strange crappy DVD RW burning though on some media...

yes, we are 100% sure... this applies to all NEC drives from 2500A to 3500A and to all TDK drives, from 880N to 1616N... Of course, no unofficial firmware is used, but only official firmwares

You guyz rule! It was definitely worth the wait! Excellent review of 3500 & so much effort put into the test details...

Newbie questions:

1) Many of the media tested were burned at higher than rated speeds (with good results). Can I safely assume PI/PO will be even better if those were burned at rated speed instead?

2) If my prime objective is safe data backup of photos - wedding/honeymoon/vacation/friends/etc and not fast DVD movie backup & +R booksetting, is the NEC 3500 still a better choice than the Pioneer 108?

3) With this drive, is there a + or - media preference? It didn't seems so from the review. Will it make a difference if I plan to burn at higher speeds or always only at rated speeds? (in other words, for the same price should I buy a + or - TY 8x spindle?)

Looking to pick one up on the weekend. The price for both NEC & Pioneer are about the same locally (<5% diff).

offtopic: i don't want to offend anyone, but couldn't you just call him and give your compliments to him? it is a little tired for us to read all these posts about how good this review is and not read about the drive itself. If we keep it like this we will reach 100 posts saying "good work" to kogos!
