It's finally out!
This firmware was released by MadDog who sell rebadged NEC DVD burners.
It allows bitsetting for Single-Layer and Dual-Layer DVD+R(W) media!

Write strategies NEC 2510 f/w 2.16 original vs Mad Dog 2.F7:

CD-R:   1.15  – 1.15
CD-RW:  1.14  – 1.14
DVD-R:  1.34f – 1.36f
DVD-RW: 1.27f – 1.28f
DVD+R:  1.34f – 1.35f
DVD+RW: 1.25f – 1.25f
DVD+R9: 1.15f – 1.15f


The Dangerous Brothers already have patched RPC1 and Riplock versions.

Just to let you know that the new Nero 6.3.1.25 bitsetting feature seems now to work with the NEC...
I've seen some DVD+R burning with "automatic" bitsetting to DVD-ROM (default behavior now of Nero).

I have tested so far with DVD+RW only, Philips 4x media.
Book type remains DVD+RW no matter that I have permanently set it to DVD-ROM using WinBType.
(Sorry, I can't post complete media code and other info right now since I am away from my NEC and stuff right now).

I have tried multiple times burning different data types (data, video, ISO) with different software, it remains DVD+RW.

I am using permanent DVD-ROM setting for all types of DVD+ media. Did anybody else experience similar problem?

Try Herrie's patched version of NEC 2.16 firmware. Herrie has added Ritek DL support. Unfortunately, Herrie's site is down at the moment, but the file seems to be there, at least, the link worked for me.

As for DVD+RW bitsetting, it seems to work with brand new disks recorded for the first time.
At least, it finally worked for me after I've bought new TDK DVD+RW. It has the same media code that Philips I've tried before, but it worked.

You must use complete format to change booktype on a DVD+RW.
Works perfectly with old HP firmware for NEC 25x0.

Do not use fast but total erasure/fomatting and the booktype will be DVD-ROM !

I have tried slow format / total erasure with different software including DVDInfoPro format option (slow with restart), nothing worked on previously recorded disks.

Strange. Do the DVD+RW slow format (it's not a DVD-RW ? ) gives a blank disc, ready to burn, but with DVD+RW booktype ?
Or were there errors during the formating process ?

Did you set DVD-ROM booktype before the slow format on a DVD+RW ?

I tried Herrie's patched version of NEC 2.16 firmware which flashed just fine, and let me burn a DL DVD on my Ritek DL disk, but it would not read in my Toshiba stand alone DVD player. The same player has read my Verbatim DL disks just fine.
Any clues?

Did you use DVD-ROM bitsetting for both DL ?

Can you post a Nero CD-DVD Speed test for the Ritek DL ?
