The Princo Budget ID of the DVD-R media is B103400258. Those are the ones that doesn't work.
The ID of the media DVD+R the the recorder recognizes is 4J032 from www.01ne.co.uk that I think that are Princo too.

From eros in TDK 1616n v2.C8 SE -> NEC ND-3500A v2.C8 SE release! :"When I check the burning sped capabilities in Nero 6.6 , without a CD, I see these available speeds:
x1, x2, x2.4, x3, x4, x5, x6 and Maximum. Is the way it's supposed to be without a CD? I have no x16 media to test if this changes with a CD. My current media , Precisa x4 , can only be burned at x2.
Ia this related to this specific firmware, or do all firmwares of the NEC 3500 behave this way?"
He also have the same problem that I do... Anyone had the some issue?

All I have right now is some 8x media I poped it in and Nero sees it as 8x speed for the burn, and I am using the 2.c8 SE firmware.

For me the thing that seemed t freak out was Roxio Media Creator 7... I was trying to burn an ISO to a disc and it kept asking me to slect a burn speed and the selections were blank...

revenant, This is completely normal. I have the same DVD±RW drive. Once you put in DVD media, it will show the speeds that THAT dvd can be burned at. No need to be worried.

koulax, just grab the BIN file you wish from the first page and with the Binflash you are able to flash the firmware you want

Just to put your mind at ease, the write speed up to x6 is only when no DVD is inserted. I have tried Memorex DVD-R x4 and they burn @ x8, and Benq DVD+R x8 @x12 . So it is only a glitch in the way recording software reports the speed of the Nec 3500 AG with no DVD media. I also have a problem where Nero Infotool doesn't report any Writers at all ! I use DVDinfo instead.

How i can know my Nec pattern?

X = 0 (OEM)
X = 1 (Retail)
X = 2 (I-O Data)
X = 4 (Freecom)
X = 7 (TDK)
X = B (Ricoh)
X = F (MadDog)
----------------------
Y = 6
Y = 7
Y = 8
----------------------

Is there any difference and should i know it before upgrading my firware?

Hi everyone, wise emperor!

Firstly Im new here to the forums, nice place you got going here, I am also new to NEC3500AG, having received mine (in the UK) from Dabs.com for 58 inc.

I got this drive because my Pioneer 106 died on my recently (two months out of warranty grrr) and on this basis decided to go with the NEC instead of the Pioneer 108, backed up by the glowing "top dog" review in this months Computer Shopper magazne which reviewed 12 DVD-RW drives, and this came out fastest :)

Was surprised to see that comparison review against the 108, which showed it faster in a lot of tests, plus the 3500 higher noise / errors? Anyway, after reading through the posts here, and burning with the drive today, I have a few questions I would love some help on!

1, Anyway, the firmware question. I have some Datawrite 90 min cd-rs (which write to 96 mins) and also some of their 99 min cds. I had the original 2.16 firmware and tonite flashed to the 2.17 from here. It still only recognises the media in nero as being able to write at 8x speed, as opposed to 24x speed?? Also, is there any firmware to allow more "overburning" to utilise the maximum of this media?

2, I have a load of 4x DVD+R media left over from my pioneer 106 (bulkpaq and infiniti). Is there any firmware to let me burn this at 8x speed, or is that just greedy :) Even if I could, would it be a good idea, would I get a lot of read errors?!

3, Finally, once I have got through this lot of blanks, I will have the game of playing what 8x media to get that will burn ok at 8x, or even faster! Still not sure exactly where to look for this advice?

Thanks again, keep up the great work :))

1, It could be that your Datawrites are a bit crappy. I noticed the same behaviour on my 3500, it seems to be a bit sensitive on bad media. A bit more than other drives, that is. If your drive suggests 8x, don't try to burn them faster, or use another burner. You will get readability problems or even coasters if you want to burn them faster on the 3500. This is not a fault of the 3500, the same media burned on another burner which allows higher speeds, will give readability issues sometimes (try a Nero CD/DVD speed and observe the graph).
2, Bulkpaq and Infinity? Just stick to 4x until they're out. Maybe they can be burned at 8x, but you'll regret it...
3, Look for MCC (Mitsibishi Chemical, mostly branded as Verbatim) or TY (Taiyo Yuden, mostly branded as Verbatim Plus or sometimes as Fujifilm) 8x specified media, preferrably '+' media. The MCC's will burn reliable at 12x, the TY's even at 16x, both with stock firmware. Search this forum or the forum at www.cdfreaks.com for more info and scan graphs of these media.

Hello!

I'm new in this forum and have just bougth my first DVD burner NEC 3500. I spend a couple of days reading forums, what firmware to use, how to upgrade the firmware and so on.

I found this forum the best, so I'll give it a try!

And of course I have a question.

I have flashed to firmware 2F8 and that seems to work fine, but I have never (regardless firmware) been able to read Princo media. I have a friend that burns a lot with that media, and when i try to copy the dvd, make an iso file or something like that it just goes to about 90% then CRC error. On every Princo i use!

Other media seems to work just fine. I have tried several diffrent programs, Nero, DVDInfo, CopyToDVD, DVDShrink, DVDDecryptor but I get the same result.

What could be the problem?

u dont mention what speed the printo media is, and what speed u are burning at?

I have read that at 8x and higher, and even a bit at 4x, the NEC can has some higher than usual jitter and other errors and noise when it changed speed burning, that is esp bad towards the end of the disk...?

Would suggest burning at 2x to minimise noise, and if they still dont work give them to someone else and get some fresh media heh.

currently there aren't any firmware that allow overspeed with CD-R media, there are however several firmware that may enable higher recording speeds for DVD+/-R media over cdfreaks
