Laplink announced Monday the release of Laplink Gold 12, the latest version of the company's file-transfer and remote-access software. New features include anti-virus and security protection for all transferred files.

In its earlier days, Laplink gave computer users a means to transfer files between computers via serial- and parallel-port connections. More recent editions have enabled network and wireless connectivity, while adding features such as remote access. Laplink Gold users can connect to local or remote computers to run applications, print files, help co-workers troubleshoot problems, and even reboot.

The new features in Laplink Gold 12 include Laplink Internet, which allows secure connections through firewalls and routers without making configuration changes or opening special ports; Laplink Antivirus, which scans all files transferred via Laplink Gold 12 and stays updated with the latest virus definitions; and Laplink Remote Desktop, a remote-access module for Windows XP Professional, Server 2000, and Server 2003 systems. Fallback Remote Control is provided for older operating systems.

Laplink Gold 12's access and remote control capabilities allow corporate IT departments to operate, maintain, reconfigure, and reboot users' computers, even if users are running older versions of Laplink Gold. The Push Install feature enables deployment of Laplink Gold 12 across the enterprise from a single location, and captures system information from remote computers.

The physical version of Laplink Gold 12 is available immediately for $129.95, which includes a USB 2.0 cable. Users can also download the software from Laplink for $109.95. Previous owners of Laplink Gold are eligible for a $50 upgrade rebate. Volume discounts are available.
