I'm looking for a good DVD-Rom. I will be using it for everything. Mostly ripping/backing up DVD's, Music & Games.

Price and sound isn't a concern.

I have read a few reviews such as on this site... but i'm still unsure of which one to get. Since many have some great hacked firmwares... especially the Toshibas. I know for a fact the SDM-1712 will rip at 12x with a hacked firmware :o)

Back when i last purchased a DVD-Rom... the Toshiba's were the best for copy protected media. Is this still true today?

Oh and i'm trying to stay away from Lite-On. They seem too cheap to me and a little TOO loud. I've also had a few that died :o/

So far i'm looking at:

Asus E616P1 or E616P2
Toshiba SDM-1712 or SDM-1912-TA

I don't know too much about the E616P2 and SDM-1912-TA. Probably because they are new?

Maybe i should wait a bit for a review on these newer drives? :o/

Just out of curosity. If i would put a Lite On in consideration. Toshiba would still be the best bet out of the three drive manufacterers? (Asus, Lite On & Toshiba)

BTW i just noticed the SD-M1912 and E616P2 have 512k of cache :o)

Personally, I do think Lite-On DVD-ROM is also a good choice.

From Toshiba's review, you may also see some testing data comparing to Asus E616, and then you may not feel so good for Asus E616's score. But it's good on DVD ripping.

As for LiteOn's review, it's kind of pity that the review did not compare to other drive but all LiteOn's.

If again to compare the DVD ripping's score, Asus E616 is still the toppest.

You may try to compare by your self.

For me my self is using Asus E616P1, and are feeling good with it.

arith, the main idea was to compare all LiteON DVD-ROM series, if we also added other DVD-ROM drives the review would be huge

emperor, I know the LiteOn's review is planning to compare with other LiteOn's drive.
But should be ok. People who want to compare LiteOn, Asus, and maybe Toshiba's DVD-ROM can open those reviews and compare by themself.

BTW, it seems the latest review's result is not added into "Expert Area"?
