It appears that Acclaim is in the midst of its final death throes. The long and illustrious career of this US games company seems to be coming to a close with the closure of a few development studios and a raft of redundancies.

With a loss of 130 jobs the Manchester studio was closed down this morning with the staff there allegedly unpaid for this month. This follows yesterday's closure of the Acclaim building in Austin, Texas workers there were reportedly locked out of their offices due to unpaid rent, no the first game's developers to experience such a morning in recent months. Earlier this week the troubled company speculated that bankruptcy might be a possibility but they were currently seeking additional funding. While the search for supporting cash no doubt continues things for the company look very bleak indeed with a filling for Chapter 11 bankruptcy expected in the next few days.

What this will mean for Acclaim's forthcoming releases, such as street racer Juiced and a new The Bard’s Tale game, is anyone's guess. The vultures will be stretching their wings, so hope remains for the games, at least.
