The Secure Sockets Layer protocol is used on every web browser and web server to encrypt secure transactions. But SSL is not just the province of 32-bit microprocessors. It can be used on low-cost 8-bitters as well. They're out there—Internet-enabled refrigerators and washing machines are here, although they're not yet common household items and might take awhile to catch on. A large, fast, and growing market for Internet-enabled embedded devices is already here, however, and it includes vending machines, security and access devices, building control, utility monitoring, point of sale, and remote data acquisition.
