Port 80 Software (, a developer of Microsoft Web server add-on tools, announced on Tuesday that it has launched w3compiler, an application that employs code optimization for Web file compression. According to the company, w3compiler compresses Web file size up to 90 percent, accelerating Web page downloads, reducing bandwidth costs and enhancing code for more robust intellectual property protection.

Port 80's w3compiler safely crunches HTML, CSS, JavaScript, ASP, ASP.NET, ColdFusion, and PHP files. Some of the optimization techniques employed include removing white space and comments, file name and color remapping, entity reduction, and meta tag management.

"Consultants charge thousands to optimize 'by hand'. One developer can crunch an entire site with w3compiler in minutes," says Joseph Lima, chief operating officer of Port80 Software. "The average HTML file can be reduced by 40 percent, and w3compiler compresses some JavaScript by 90 percent."

W3compiler is designed to run on Windows 2000, XP, and Windows Server 2003. It features a graphical user interface, command line interfaces for scripted optimization and an internal preview browser. The application is for a free fifteen-day trial and is priced at $79.95 per CPU.
