Q. Is it necessary to subscribe to a virus protection service and pay a yearly fee, or can I download a good free program?

A. No matter which antivirus program you use, it is important to keep your computer updated with the latest virus definition files. These files are available from software manufacturers for an annual fee.

Even if you have antivirus software installed, the latest worms and other Internet pests can infect your computer if you do not update the software so that it can recognize newer viruses.

Free antivirus programs for Windows include AntiVir Personal Edition (www.free-av.com), AVG Free Edition (free.grisoft.com/freeweb .php/doc/2) and eTrust EZ Armor (www.my-etrust.com/ Microsoft; it is free for one year). But you may find better technical support and a wider array of features in some of the antivirus programs designed specifically for home users.

Many major security software companies offer free trial versions of their products (which usually include firewall and privacy-control products as well as antivirus software) and free online virus-scanning services that you can use to find out whether your machine is infected.

The Web sites of companies like Trend Micro (www.trendmicro .com), Symantec (www.symantec .com), Panda Software (www .pandasoftware.com) and McAfee Security (www.mcafee.com) offer extensive information on their products and services for PC users. Symantec also makes antivirus and other security programs for Macintosh systems, as does Intego (www.intego.com).
