i am new to the forums, and would like to know where everyone gets their TYs from. My Ritek G04s are starting to be unreadable in non-pioneer drives, i don't know why... anyways, i read in the watchdog thread about counterfeit TYs... i have some counterfeit TY cd-rs and that was really disappointing.

If you let us know where you are located, I'm sure we can help you find a reliable supplier!

In the meantime, could you please post your experiences with counterfeit Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs in the Media Watchdog thread? It would help others to avoid being in the same situation!

I am located in the US, I live in Georgia and my parents live in California. I usually buy Ritek DVDRs from Meritline or stock up on DVDRs and CDRs at computer shows when I am in the Los Angeles (California) area. I bought some bad TY CDRs from one of the vendors at the computer fair.

My father often asks which media i recommend, so for a time I stayed away from TY because I did not know where to get real TYs. I told him to buy Verbatim CDRs or Fuji (Made in Japan) CDRs... but I finally got him to switch to DVDR technology. I recommended Ritek G04/G05 to him, but I noticed some of my G04s no longer work in my Toshiba SD-M1402. So I decided it is time to start picking up TYs...

I'll post my experience of what went wrong with the TY CDs in watchdog section

Try Shop4tech.com, they are much cheaper then Meritline for Taiyo Yuden 4x DVD-Rs:
http://www.shop4tech.com/user.htm?go=view_item&id=2110&cata=1&s_cata=88

generally I would suggest avoiding Meritline, as many people have posted having bad experiences with them. Being in Canada, I don't buy from either of them!

thanks Dolph,

I will probably order from shop4tech, but I was curious what program is good for verifying a real TY? I only knew about the fake TYs because of obvious signs of a counterfeit.

Real TY DVD-Rs and fake ones are almost impossible to tell apart if you don't already know better... I'll let you know when I find a way

until then, only the disc's quality, or lack thereof will tell you

I actually emailed Taiyo Yuden USA and asked them if they have a list of authorized resellers for their DVD media. I don't think they will get back to me though; I think I sent my email to wholesale distribution sales email, although i made the subject of the email "Counterfeit Taiyo Yuden DVD media".

I remember purchasing a lot of VHS media from http://www.americanrecordablemedia.com/mediad.asp, and noticed they sell TY DVD-+Rs, since I have used them in the past I trust them over meritline. They are cheaper than shop4tech, so I might try them. I used to fansub anime, so I purchased a lot bulk VHS back in the day.

Hrm... perhaps we should talk of this elsewhere (I'm a big anime fan myself)

Yes better keep this topic only for TY media, and move to free discussion about anime movies (ghost in the shell or something like that, hehe)

sorry i didn't mean to stray off topic, my intent was to show that i had prior dealings with american recordable; and not just a few media... rather a lot (1000 count per order). I think they are good, and they have a good price, so i'll probably buy from them

They *DO* have incredible Taiyo Yuden DVDR pricing, their Verbatim isn't bad either! I think I know who makes their Talon DVDRs too

Good is a relative term... Talon are Optodisc OEMs, so if your drive works with Optodisc, then they are good, otherwise they are bad
