You mean by this DW1600/1620 --> DW1630 through firmware?

It's on their own website under chapter Firmware-FAQ. How official do you want it?

will 1620 write dvd-r 12x or 16x max? according to this page http://global.benq.com/wm/front/benqmain.asp?MenuHead=131&ShowType=program&FileURL=product.asp&style=11990&headline=Tech%20Specs&model=DW1620&GenMenu=&RootId=undefined 16x will be the max writing speed for DVD-R, but some days ago it showed 12x max

It's getting a little confusing. First it was 8x -R, then it became 12x -R and now we're reading 16x -R. But I'm sure it will be 12x -R.

Now I have enough trouble finding dvd-r media at 8x, where is the 12x media coming from? Will this be a limited number of 8x discs supported as the Plextor 708 and 712 situation?

One month ago, I issue a question to one engineer of Plextor's Taiwan agent that "How can you test the 712A drive's 12X writing capability, since the 12X media is so hard to find ?" He just answered that they just use 8X media for all tests, but only TY, MC, Ritek, and CMC can pass test.

Also, one DVD media dealer told me that they are told by Ritek and CMC, the certification process of media in burner maker side goes very slow. So, they draw a little back on the massive production of 8X media. The other reason is that they are moving out the over-produced 4X media stock as quicker as they can to catch up the price dropping and that takes time.

Yes there are no 12X/16X, companies announced them but won't come until late Septemeber, most current 12X/16X recorders just overspeed the existing 8X media to reach such high recording speeds

The media always seems to lag the write speeds of the drive. This was true with each successive cd write speed, and history is repeating itself with dvd burning speeds. In the end, they always just test the new write speed on the fastest high quality media they can get their hands on.
