Guyz, have just bought this yesterday as an OEM version. Is it true you are not able to upgrade the firmware on this model beacuseit is not retail. Or can anyone direct me to a site which allows me to upgrade the firmware on my oem model.

Below is what NEC have said for V1.07
"this Update works only with NEC ND-2500A (retail&bulk), not with OEM releases.
(OEM means part of a full PC package or external USB/FireWire variant of this burner)
For OEM products contact your dealer, distributior or manufacturer of PC package"

You can upgrade the NEC2500A OEM drive by using a DOS flasher...

Hi guys, I have a lacie usb external drive, recognized by win xp pro as a nec 2500a, firmware version 1,06.
My drive should burn dvds at 8x, but I can only burn at 4x (I already tried several softwares such as nero, roxio, clone dvd, etc and media such as verbatim, ritek, etc).

What do you suggest me to do to be able to write dvd at 8x? is a firmware upgrade suitable? in case, can I use a dos flasher with an external drive (it is connect with a pcmcia to usb 2.0 card by conceptronics)? which fimware is the best?

You would need to install the drive at PC and upgrade with the patched firmware to add more media codes for the 8X burning...

Hi emperor, thank you for your help. What do you exactly mean when you say "install the drive at PC"? I installed the drive with lacie drivers, but my drive is an external drive, so I can't install it *into* a PC (unless you tell how to do it ;-) ). sorry but I'm Italian and my english is a bit poor...

For minos: I used 4x certified dvd, but nec says I should be able to burn a verbatim -r 4x certified at 8x with my drive (read on media compatibility list on nec site). Also, a friend of mine has an internal drive (a different model) and is able to write the same dvds at 8x. Thank you for helping me too!

thanks fiscelan, but are u sure i can do that on an external drive without having problems? And can't I use a more "stable" release? I mean I'm not realy interested in dual layer at the moment, I'd only like my burner to work at 8x, so maybe nec's 1.07 firmware could be enough... I'm not sure I want to be a beta tester, at the moment, as long as I can't go back to 1.06... is anydody able to help me?

If you use the Windows flasher, you could update the external drive without any problems, the 1.07v DLBS should be considered stable since the writing strategies changed for the normal DVD recordable media are there from previous firmware and of course DL and Booktype should work, of course you the beta testing continues...

I didn't exactly understood your message, tell me if what I say is ok: if I use 1.07v DLBS I have a stable release improved also for DL writing, is this wright? were can I get this flasher?
