I came across a really cheap closout on some Maxell audio CDRs in a local drugstore. They are made in Taiwan and have azo dye. I was unaware that anyone besides Mitsubishi made such discs and I thought they were all made in Japan. I also heard about compatibility issues with Mitsubishi in Lite-On drives, but these work fine in my LTR 40125s. So who might have made these? -or does Mitsubishi have a Taiwan factory?

Azo dyes can be found from other places then Mitsubishi. I'm not in my store right now, so I can't tell you exactly, but there are different factories that produce CDs with that dye.

Super AZO & METAL AZO are the pattented names of Mitsubitshi Chemicals.(Verbatim)
Now some of these disc's are made in Taiwan.

They've had a Taiwanese plant for ages, and no one else can make and sell Super/Metal AZO media other than Mitsubishi and it's subsiduaries.

Only one i know of is, Verbatim. Verbatim is a wholy owned subsidary of Mitsubishi.

This is exactally the point. Only and I state "ONLY" the "Verbatim" brand has the Metal AZO discs, these are produced by Mitsi, exclusively under the Verbatim name. There are no other companies using this dye as it is copyrighted, and patented.

Wrong. You forget that Mitsubithsi (Chemicals) is also selling there own disc under the Mitsubitshi brand in some countries.
So you can get Mitsubitshi AZO disc's.(Even Metal Azo if I am correct)

Did TDK used AZO for thier 16X "Certified Plus" CD-Rs (white tops) that were made in the USA and Japan back in 1989-91 before they switched to mostly Ritek (and CMC/TY later?) The writable side used blue ink like Verbatims did.

I had a lot of success with them until I got a 30 pack, the last 10 gave me nothing but headaches - the CD would work great after it was burned, but after a couple weeks or months would stop working. I read that TDK shut down thier USA plants - perhaps poor quality control might have been a reason.

Since the only combined with verbatim as brand is not right since there are also disc's under Mitsubishi's own brand.
And there is more.

They don't say that it's Metal AZO however it is. Or what would you call the special disc's that Yamaha has for there disc t@2 system which are also made by Mitsubishi Chemicals. Also Yamaha has sold 8x Metal Azo disc's made by Mitsubishi Chemicals in the past.

Also Plextor has shipped Mitsubishi Azo disc's with there drives. And which are labelled with Plextor as brand.
However these disc's are really rare.

So now we have 4 brands that have used Azo disc's.

Mitsubishi(sonic azo, metal azo, super azo)
Yamaha (8x and disc t@2 discs)
Verbatim(metal azo, super azo)
Plextor [rare. Just the same looks at the top that all other Plextor disc's have.]

So MP3Mogul still the first part is correct of your last posts the one that says that all these disc's are Azo disc's and made by Mitsubishi Chemicals. However there are more brands that use these discs then Verbatim or Mitsubishi. Like I posted above.

On closer inspection when comparing to a genuine Verbatim, these Maxells don't look quite the same. They are dark blue, but with a bit of green tint. They don't look like cyanine or pthalo either. Any ideas?

No but if you can use cdr-identifier.
It makes me think.
If AZO really is that populair in Japan as some people say. Then there got to be more manufacturers around. That uses this type of dye.

RJW, I was correct in my post, not to burst your bubble, know who owns verbatim? Try Mitsibushi! LOL, that would make it Mitsi, owned/operated/produced by Mitsi!!! and as for plextor or yamaha having these discs, they still are MITSI discs are they not? I think we are losing the point of posting in the forum, and need to remember that the forum is intended to be InFORMATIVE, and help users. The point of your post was usless, and not informative.

The topic of this discussion is "ANYONE BESIDES MITSIBUSHI MAKE (KEYWORD MAKE) THESE DISCS. The answer is NO they own the copywrite on the discs. End of discussion.
