Here are the Negatives from John's Review :-
- Mt. Rainier implementation needs improvement
- Disabling "PoweRec" may cause C2 errors. Test it first!
- SD2 v2.51.021+ backups will not work with most CD/DVD-ROMS
- Some glitches with written US-RW media
- Cannot recognise 99min discs
- C2 error information is supported but with low accuracy

Just to save you searching for them !!!

We should expect improvements at the following negatives

- Mt. Rainier implementation needs improvement
- Disabling "PoweRec" may cause C2 errors. Test it first!
- Some glitches with written US-RW media
- Cannot recognise 99min discs

I don't think that the following can be improved [?]

- SD2 v2.51.021+ backups will not work with most CD/DVD-ROMS
- C2 error information is supported but with low accuracy

I don't see that as being a negative. It is quite obvious this would be the case as the drive doesn't run the media detection parameters...

With the new firmware, PleXWriter 48/24/48A(U):
    PX-W4824TA V1.01

    Added:
  • Support for newer CD-R media.
    Fixed Bugs:
  • The PoweRec disable setting is changed after a simulate write.
    Improvements:
  • Many improvements for Mount Rainier support.

So it looks as if Mt. Rainier is already "suppost" to be improved - I can't check yet as my PX-W4824A hasn't arrived yet, hopefully tomorrow! [:I]

Thanks Laffin!

Anyone happen to know what accounts for the low C2 information accuracy as opposed to their previous drives? Do you think Plextor did this on purpose, or was it simply a missed detail?

Actually none of the tested Plextor recorders has 100% C2 error information. Probably you need special commands to extract that information and not the common MMC commands

Hey John, I think you (As I did and many others) expected MORE from the Plextor 48x drive than Plextor put in it, huh?

Actually the Plextor 48X drive is a good drive with good features, good speed and more of all very good writing quality. If you look at the test results, it has the best burning quality from other 48X burners. Yes there are issues (as with all recorders) and in the near future it is expected that will be fixed.

Also don't forget that our new reviews have higher and more strict standards than earlier reviews.

John, Laffin Assassin, I wonder why Plextor's 48x drive price is dropping soooo fast. You don't think it's because it's inferior to previous drives do you?![?][?]

no, it's due to the market. It's nearly impossible to trying to sell a 48x burner when it's price is 3x more then the competition. If they don't lower it, they'll never be able to enough. The same is happening with the CRW-F1. they're going for around $109 to $129 with rebates now.

Hi Cal
Well personally I don't think so !!!
My own opinion is it is because Plextor have suddenly realised that they are not going to sell as many as they expected at that price so they have to drop the price to keep up with the competition otherwise the Retailers will end up with shelves full of them and stop buying them !!!
This is one thing we have got to thank Lite-on for with them selling their Writers at an affordable price and now all Manufacturers are going to have to keep their prices down including Yamaha !!!
IT'S THE START OF PRICE WAR I LOVE IT !!!

Ok, seems as though drives prices are down across the manufactures then. [^]
