I've been a faithful user of TDK media for about 3 years. Never had problems with their discs. I purchased a spindle at CompUSA a couple of days ago and am having horrible results. The discs look like they have a different dye so I ran them through CDr ID and got the following:

ATIP: 97m 15s 17f
Disc Manufacturer: Ritek Co.
Reflective layer: Dye (Short strategy; e.g. Phthalocyanine)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 702.83MB (79m 59s 73f / LBA: 359848)

The audio discs I've burned don't work in my Toyota car or in my Riovolt MP3/CD player but do work in an older Sony Discman. I checked out some of the TDKs I'd had success with in the past and got the following:

Disc Manufacturer: TDK Corp.
Reflective layer: Dye (Long strategy; e.g. Cyanine, Azo etc.)

Disc Manufacturer: Ritek Co.
Reflective layer: Dye (Long strategy; e.g. Cyanine, Azo etc.)

So my conclusion is that the Phthalocyanine dye is causing me problems and not the Ritek manufacturer. I'm using a Yamaha CRW4416S at 4x write speed. A couple of questions for the group:

1. has anyone heard of Yamaha's having problems with Phthalocyanine media?

1. would it be advisable to still use the discs for data since my computer doesn't seem to have a problem reading them?

2. Can someone recommend another brand of media? ok, Taiyo Yuden is the best but how can you tell which discs at the local store are Taiyo Yuden or not (assuming it's not printed on the package)?

thanks a lot!
Dave

I think true Cyanine dye is much better quality, and lasts much longer...

TDK must have gone the cheap-assed way with their new batch of blanks
Many people also hate Ritek CD-Rs

But having saying that, I have used the above discs and have had no probs with them recording perfect in my PX-W2410A and 24X

Well i've bought some of those too but i hadn't problems with them.
i havea plex16 and the only true good thing about them is the overburn size.
i also think that this cds are way too expensive and then they are manufactured by ritek.
i prefer verbatim they also have lower quality cds but they are cheaper and have he same quality as the tdk's

Actually, isn't the phthalocyanine dye supposed to last longer but the cyanine dye is more compatible.
