Is the price difference between the Pioneer and the Liton 811 worth it for going with the Pioneer? I will be writing edited home movies that I want to be played on HT DVD players as well as backing up a variety of things. My first foray into DVD burners so I would like some suggestions. If the Liton is just as good as the Pioneer as well as being cheeper it also comes in black which I would prefer. Any idea if the Pioneer will offer a blk face plate?

I think you cannot compare the quality of a Pioneer drive with LiteOn's. I would go for it. As for the black version, there will be one in Europe but not sure about US.

Yeah, the Pioneer is far superior to the LiteON in most things, although game copying works better on the LiteON I think.

Thank you all for the input and for welcoming me to the forum. I also plan on purchasing a new regular DVD drive to replace my old Creative PCDVD Encore 5x drive which cannot play some disks because of the new copy protection. I assume companion drives from either of these manufacturers would suffice as well?

Well now I see that Newegg is carrying the OEM black model of the 07. and the price has gone down now too! Now we are talkin. Anyone know what im going to be missing with regard to software bundle by going with OEM as opposed to retail? By the way...what is my best bet on blank media?

I'd recommend a LiteON based DVD-ROM, they are pretty error tolerant, and play just about everything. The 166s is a pretty good model from what I've seen (I only have burners, I don't have room for CD-ROMs or DVD-ROMs in my system anymore!)

For us UK boys and gals the online shop JWHEE0615 is selling the Black Pioneer for �80.

Then i read this......

Newegg.com does not ship internationally. At this time we only ship within the United States and Puerto Rico. [:(!]

Well I just received my new OEM black pioneer DVR-107D from New Egg today. I will install tonight and see how it works. What is a decent media you can buy a Best Buy or the like that will work good with this drive. The last time I looked they didnt have any 8X media so I guess 4X will do for testing.

try the imation 4x+ at officemax they will write 8x, it ricoh01 i think.

I'll vouch for the LiteOn 166s DVD ROM, as I picked one up for 20 USD...

I threw a CD (Audio) across the driveway 4 or 5 times, scratched the living daylights out of it.... but the LiteOn read it like it was nothing....

Also tested the worst possible scratched DVD I could find, and it ripped it just the same, slowed down a bit to just 8X but it did rip it fine...
