Plextor's newest can do 18X on single layer DVDR media, 10X on DVD+R DL

If four minute DVD-R burn times were not fast enough for you, Plextor just announced the E-IDE PX-760A DVD recorder.  The drive is capable of burning 18X speeds on 16X certified DVD-R and DVD+R media.  Furthermore, the drive obtains 10X speeds on supported DVD+R dual layer media, and 6x record speeds on DVD-R dual layer media.  The drive is capable of burning DVD-RW, DVD-VR and CD-R/W media as well.

SATA versions of the PX-760 are due out later this year, but Plextor is releasing an external USB version called the PX-760UF, at the same time as the E-IDE drive.  The drive features a 2MB buffer and Plextor's PowerRec technology.  PowerRec dynamically adjusts the laser intensity and burn speed to correct impurities in the recordable media.

The new PX-760 drives will retail for $119 USD in April of this year.  The retail package comes with Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 and Plextor's Plextools software.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to this drive.  Unfortunately, USD will more than likely be 199.99 at retailers.  This is usually what they do..

Why drop the 8MB buffer to 2MB?????????? This is bad news for the new drives, the buffer should be retained at 8MB like the PX-712/16 series, possibly upped to 16MB for 18X DVD transfers... 2MB is emptied in ~1 second at these speeds...

Don't say to save money, these drives already command a premium price, I'm sure the people who are in the market for such units would pay the extra cost of the bigger buffer.

This is the only negative side except for maybe missing DVD-RAM writing that can currently be found specs-wise on paper - can't wait for the reviews!

I agree - would prefer a larger buffer.  Gives me peace of mind while multi-tasking, but I am picking up an Athlon 64 X2 processor... but I will pass on this Plextor offering as well.  18x speed does not interest me at all.  I thought 16x was the limit and anything faster may result in an "explosion" within the drive.  I'll hold on to my PX-716A...

I am rather curious to see the quality at 18X, a speed over the "limit".
Latetly Plextor does a lot of tricks...such as the BenQ and Teac oem drives...and now the buffer, who knows what they have on mind...

I agree about the 2mb buffer.... but I haven't had any problems at 16x with a 2mb buffer on my LG....

I'm gonna purchase it no matter what.... because this drive "IS" a plextor....

People gone crazy....hahahahahahaha....

Anyway....it surely is Plextor....that tells everything...but my personal opinion is that its not worth it....(as long as you already own some 16x drive)...because this sexy baby will cost almost twice as much (as average 16x drive)...and what it offers for all that (exept that its Plextor, which is great, but...)? Only 2x improvement....18 over 16 and 10 over 8....come on....cant you wait those few seconds more...and spend this money on your wife's new sexy underwear (or maybe invite some sexy babe out to dinner in case you're single)???

But MP3Mogul...you are only one allowed to go for this Plextor...cause its like Bill Gates would want new US$100M Mega-Yacht....and because he can get it without any hassle or headaches....so can you....and you MUST! Thats an order from your general!

Good luck and best wishes everyone!
