China's police shut down 598 domestic porn websites and wiped out 35 porn domain names from September to November in an ongoing crackdown against pornography on the internet, state media said on Thursday. The sites were shut after the public reported them to police, the Xinhua news agency said, citing a news conference given by the Ministry of Public Security Thursday. Reports of porn websites have since dropped to 9.4 per day from 14.1 previously and now mostly refer to foreign porn websites, the ministry said. Some 2700 cases of online porn were reported in 2000 and 14 000 in 2004, indicating that online pornographic activities were still rising in China, said ministry officials. The ministry also revealed that more than 80 percent of the computers used in China were infected by viruses annually in recent years and the daily junk mail flowing to domestic users exceeded 60 million, making China a giant in the sending and receiving of junk mail. The campaign to crack down on internet porn was launched in September. Source : AFP
