Directly, no need to take it out.

I undestand that your brother LG 2166 do Lightscribe, and is a 4164 inside ? So 4164 do LS. So there's not any difference between 4164 and 4166...

I just uploaded the  newer Firmware 1.0.1 to my LG 2166D , everything works now fine :) but the info tool  shows now
4166B instead of 2166D ?

Will i be able in the Future upload 2166 Firmwares to this drive :) ?

I hope ala42 (author of MCSE) will support the 4166 in a near future.
As we verify, there is no checksum in the firmware (we flash my 4166 several times with alpha firmwares).

So doing a ".bin" showing 4166 or 2166 (known as id_string) is not a problem.

I think the dangerous brothers ( tdb.rpc1.org ) are working on patched LG firmwares too.

So, don't worry

The 4164 and 4166 are NOT the same drive!

The 2166 is a 4166 except it is an external writer.

In the LG 2166 from my brother was a 4164! and in my 2166 a 4166.
We two flashed now our External LG 2166 with the Fiemware you put online  (thank you very much!!)

and now everything works fine!!
The only thing,  the info tool shows the two 2166 now as 4163B ..

As I say, there is no checksum in the firmware (.bin).

If you open the .bin with an hex editor, change 4166 id string with 2166 string, save the new .bin, and flash the new bin, I think your 2166 will be back.
But is it worth the risk ? I don't think. Better wait for an official firmaware update, and see then.

He also tested the Lightscribe function...so what are the differnce between the 4164 and the 4166?

Why ? I believe they are the same now, at least for the last 4164 : same Panasonic chipset, same boot code in firmware as ala42 report, and they are working with the same firmware. And LS seems to work with the last 4164 produced

They are not the same drive.  The firmware "INCORRECTLY" states it is flashing a 4164 drive, but it's just bad code in the descriptor....

I have emailed LG, and they state the hardware in the 4164/4166 are totally different.  The 2166 and the 4166 are the same drive, one external, the other internal.

If you have flashed a 4164 to a 4166 FANTASTIC as long as it is working mate!  Never look a gift horse in the mouth!

I have a related question. I am having more and more trouble installing games.
I think it is copy protection like safedisc.

I have 2 LG drives   CD-RW:GCE-8523b   //DVD:gsa-4163b
I can't install need for speed: most wanted.  On one drive it stalls at prompting for the correct disk 2 and on the other it insists i need the correct disk 3..

I currently have a question out to LG about whether updating my firmware to latest will make them compatible with latest copy protection.  (i don't like this option as it seems complicated and iffy :)

So my question here is this...Is the newest LG drive compatible with the latest copy protections?? I am tempted to buy a new drive but not if my problem will remain unresolved.

Or is LG even the best way to go? 

bottom line: do you guys not have this problem???

i have some question, i buy this LG GSA-4166B (firmware original 1.00)
two months ago. i have some problem burning with DVD + r disks.
uuh,,
some specifications here
Amd 3400 +, 1 gig ram, over 300 HDD, Asus K8V se deluxe motherboard..
burn soft nero 6 or 7 same results.

LG GSA-4166B  burns every disks cd r, cd-rw, dvd-rw,dvd+rw, 10 points ok, no errors.
but only DVD + r disks with errors. lot of errors, they don`t work at all.
i have tested few medias. Maxell, tdk, Ritek (made), ööö, ricoh made.
nero test say a lot of errors and disk can`t go in the end,, say some error.
Another dvd players philips, denver, silvercrest,don`t  read this disks.
some disk  read about 1/3 part but then error to read.
i have flashed that firmware to 1.01  and no help in here.
i think,,,, i have a BAD drive.
lightsribe works well,,, i like that, and overall, very good drive but
this DVD +r problem. What you think guys?

+ i have burned about 30 disks DVD+r now , all bad
2 pcs TDK DVD + DL , bad result.
i have checked Lg recommendent list off any media type.
few tested media numbers here, example :
  : POMSC001 002 (000) prodye
   : MCC 003 (000) titanium
   : RICOHJPN D00 (001)  tdk










what media type you can recommendent.?

The +R media you have used is poor quality.  Get some Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.
