Hi Everyone,

This is my first post and I hope someone can help me.

I am looking for a DVD recorder with HDD and have looked at the Liteon LVW-5045 but after reading a number of adverse reviews on Amazon, I have now turned my attention to either the Sony RDRHX510 or RDR-HX710. So far the reviews I have read seem far more consistent (mostly good as opposed to the 50/50 ratio of the Liteon). I would welcome further comments good or bad from anyone who has brought either of the Sony recorders.

I have also just become aware of some exciting new models from Hitachi - DV DS161E and DV DS81E, which are multi format and have other new features. If anyone has brought one of these I would also welcome your views.

Also, can anyone tell me the best and cheapest place to get either of the recorders. In particular any info about online companies with a good reputation and that can be trusted would be very helpful.

Many thanks for all in advance.

Tony H

Welcome Tony!

It would be helpful to know where you are located when seeking advice on costs and availability of products.

Hi SithTracy,

Thanks, yes you are right and sorry about that.

I am in the UK, so of course I mean UK suppliers in relation to the question asked.  Any info on the product would be great too.

Cheers!

Tony

I'd be interested in the Hitachi machines as well. Does anyone know when they'll be available in the UK? They're meant to have been released in September, but there's no sign yet.

Hi pepchick,

There are already in the UK.  From the high street you can get them (apparently) from John Lewis.  Also online company http://www.flatdeal.co.uk/ (found on http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/retailer/10666/).

If you rush out a buy one, please let us all know what you think of it.  I am yet to see a review by someone who has brought one, hence still sitting on fence between Sony or Hitachi.

Cheers!

Tony

Ah, thanks for the info. Isn't it a bit odd that only one place sells them?

Pepchick,

2 actually, but whos counting!  I know what you mean though.  Lots of people doing Sonys but hardly anyone stocking the Hitachi.  Does not mean that it is not a great machine though.

I was always under the impression that most of what Hitachi produce is good stuff, but I would still not buy until I can get a first hand review and opinion on the machine.  So many of these DVD recorders have bugs and just dont work or do what they say, so I am not going to rush into anything.

It was only released in UK in September, which is probably why I cant find one person so far on the net who has done a review of these.  Come on, someone must have one!

Cheers,

Tony

Know what you mean ... I was hoping to get something this payday, but I'm intrigued by the Hitachi (and reluctant to get it quite so soon). :-/ I keep flipping between the Pioneer 433, Panasonic EH50, Sony 710 (non-freeview) ... er, and now these two.

Does the Hitachi do xvid as well as divx? Could I just put an .avi file on the hard drive and watch it? I can't find anything about the Hitachi machines on videohelp.com.

Hello Pepchick,

I have just sent you an email, but forgot to add that depending on where you intend to buy from, the Sony 710 HXD (with freeview tuner) can be less than some places for the non freeview version.  It pays to shop around.

Are you in UK Pepchick?  I ask as I think the UK spec is different and is model number 710 HXD rather than just HX.  I only just found this out myself, so it shows you have to be careful!

Cheers!

Tony

Can the freeview one still record from an external source? As I can't get freeview, and can't see that changing any time soon, a dvd/hdd recorder with an internal tuner isn't a whole lot of use for me.

edit: yes, in the uk.

Having just purchased a Sony rdrhxd710 I am now in the proccess of returning the machine to the supplier, reason being that it has a "Ghosting" on the picture its as if the analogue signal is breaking through the picture.
I have tried a Sony 510 with the freeview box connected and this has a perfect picture.
I would advise any potential purchaser of the Sony 710 to check it out before buying.

Hello Geome,

Can you confirm whether you posted elsewhere about this, as I saw the same somewhere else.  Just want to know if it was you as I want to know if this seems to be a recurring fault or maybe you just have a faulty one.

Many thanks,

Tony H
