I knew it'd never be easy but...

Anyway, I finally decided to bite the bullet & get myself a DVD writer, so I did. It's a Philips PBDV1640b. Plugged it in, it recognised fine etc... Had a couple of CDs that needed burning, so I did them first - no probs. DVDs play fine too. Then I tried writing a DVD...
I'm trying to write data using nero 6.6.0.16 to a Verbatim DVD-R, & it fails as soon as it tries to start burning :( just a "write error", nothing more descriptive than that!

I've tried a few DVDs & get the same error, so I don't suspect the media.
I've updated the firmware.
I've installed a new ASPI layer (using forceaspi17).
I've tried burning at a lower speed.
I've tried taking the other CD drive out, so that the DVD's on it's own IDE channel.
I've tried pulling my hair out.

Any more ideas would be much appreciated!

Oh, it's on XPSP2, 1.4Tbird, 512mb ram, gigabyte 7vt600p-RZ mobo.

Cheers!

you have latest firmware, latest nero, great quality media... wow, sounds like problem while leadin.
did you get only one failed burn? dma enabled and but do you use an 80pin cable? before any conclusions try a different disc.

I tried to get it all right...!
It failed a good few times; definately not a one off.  DMA is enabled, but I'm really not sure what an 80pin cable even is! Just on a boggo IDE lead atm... is this a really silly newbie style mistake?!

Cheers

No, I just try to figure out what might be the problem.

The 80pin IDE cable is the same with this one you have for your HD. If you take a closer look to it you'll see that there are more and thinner small cables, 80 instaed of 40. I read that recent Plextor, BenQ abd Philips drives need 80pin.

Don't forget to use a different disc.

That could be the problem then... I'm just using my old IDE lead (about 6 years old!) - Only 40pin as far as I know.  Guess I'd better get hold of an 80pin jobbie!  Works fine for reading DVDs & writing CDs though... still sound likely?

Also any ASPI layer above 4.60 is not good for XP.  You can download a file at the link below that will fix your ASPI layer to the more stable 4.60 version.  There is an included file that you must READ and follow the instructions exactally!

Download ASPI 4.60 here.

FWIW, the Ultra ATA 66/100/133 cables are 80-wire (or 80-conductor) and not 80-pin.  There are still only 40-pins, just 2 wires per pin.

An easy way to identify the cable is:
- wire strands are smaller
- connectors typically will have one black (master), one grey (slave) and one blue (motherboard) connector.

Also make sure that your BIOS prints out that you're using DMA Modes 2, 4, 5 or 6.  These correspond to Ultra ATA 33, 66, 100, 133, respectively.

BTW, I've used ASPI 4.71.2 w/o any problems for a long time.  Also doesn't Nero use it's own ASPI layer or WinXP's SPTI?  I can see if he was using other apps to burn that might not have their own ASPI layer and depend on the system one though.

Ok, I'd just obviously not noticed it before, but I do have an 80pin (/wire!) lead on the channel with the burner on it.  Only a 40pin one on the HDD channel though...

I'll check what the BIOS says now...

Ok, I'm an eejit!  Well I still think it's a bit silly to have a BIOS that defaults to SATA: disabled, but hey!

Still, my first DVD just burned fine; cheers guys

HD with 40pin??? Hmmm better get another 80pin for this also. Irrelevant with your problem, just a suggestion.

Would sound like a good idea!  It's a kinda clever lead though, with a laptop HD connection as well as the standard IDE, so I guess I'd just need to get an adaptor for the laptop HD to use with an 80pin lead... I've got the lead in my box of bits - just never noticed the difference! lol

I take that back...  I was thinking that SATA was the same as Ultra-ATA, but obviously it's a totally different thing.  So as there's nowt plugged into the SATA sockets on my mobo, why should my DVD drive only work with SATA enabled in BIOS?!

If you have no SATA device installed on your PC then you can disable the SATA controller from BIOS. This way you won't see it in boot and windows.

You'd think so wouldn't you!  But my DVD drive only started working when I enabled it...
