Linux founder Linus Torvalds has found himself having to defend recent actions he has taken to protect the Linux trademark. He claims his efforts have been out of concern for intellectual-property rights and not as a way to cash in on Linux.

In July, an attorney acting on behalf of Torvalds sent letters to 90 Australian companies requesting that they give up legal claims to the name Linux and purchase a license from the Linux Mark Institute (LMI).

The institute is a nonprofit organization that acts as a licensing entity for the Linux trademark, and charges between US$200 and $5,000 for sublicenses.
