Hello there,
I am looking for suggestions to set up 2 IDE hard drives and 2 DVD drives.  Currently my Win XP Home has 2 IDE hard drives: 120 GB as master and 160 GB as slave, both on primary IDE channel.  It also has a IOMagic 8x DVD+-rw burner as master on secondary IDE channel.  I plan to replace the 8x DVD burner with a LG GSA 1463DVD burner and to add a Hitachi DVD-ROM.  I read somewhere that one should pair the faster hard drive with the slower DVD drive on the same channel.  Since I wish to do disk-to-disk copying,  I would appreciate your suggestions as to how to go about this.  Thank you.

keep the HDD at the primary IDE channel and install the LG drive as MASTER, while the DVD-ROM as SLAVE at the secondary IDE channel

Do you mean keep both HDs on the primary IDE channel, LG as master on the secondary channel and DVD ROM as slave on the same?
