More than three tons of counterfeit DVDs and videotapes have been destroyed at a plastics recycling plant in Parow Industria - the third batch of fake merchandise to have been disposed of in Cape Town in a week and the fourth this year. "It seems to come in cycles," said James Lennox, chief executive officer for the Southern African Federation Against Copyright Theft (Safact), which represents the interests of the major movie distribution companies. "We have to hold the stash for a considerable amount of time as it is court evidence."
The potential estimated loss in DVD sales in South Africa was R40-million and film studios globally were losing up to $4-billion a year. Counterfeits in all sectors globally accounted for a loss of $500-billion in sales a year, Lennox said.
