With the help of a UK-based anti-piracy firm, Sony BMG has instituted a test of technology aimed at stopping copies of copied discs.

The new technology, called "sterile burning," makes use of a digital rights management method to prevent a copied disc from being copied itself.

About ten titles released by Sony BMG have had this technology added to the discs. An owner may copy tracks from the original CD onto a backup CD. But attempts to copy tracks from that copy will fail.

Sony sees casual copying of CDs as a problem, one that has contributed to the reported downswing in music sales. People don't see the practice of copying something they believe they own as wrong, and many do so as they find music they wish to share with others.

Up to 2 million CDs shipped by Sony have this technology on-board.

Well, they are on the right track, at least they admit, one should be able to make a backup, or transfer to his/her MP3 Player.  It's a start at least!

It is interesting to know if this new technology works in conjunction to a particular burning application.
Otherwise, is seems bogus to us...
