I know since I'm new I'm gonna say things wrong so please bare with me.
I just got a NEC-3520a (with a max. burn speed of 16x.) & will have a stack of Taiyo Yuden 8x blanks arriving soon. I check on the NEC site for the  recommended media and the TY 8x was listed as having a max. write speed of 16x.
To achieve the max speed do I have to install bootleg firmware or should my burning program just see the 16x speed? If not, how do I get the burner to burn at the max write speed?
I'm currently running XP with SP2 and MyDVD (don't ask, it's a TiVo thing ).

Even the first official firmware, the 3520 supports 16X for the certified 8X DVD+R (YUDEN000T02) media and 12X for the DVD-R (TYG02).

You don't need anything special. I recommend you also Nero Burning Rom.

Thanks, that's a relief!

I've got to use MyDvd to trancode the .tivo files.  I tried to use Nero but was unsucessful.  I suspect it was a codec thing but was able to get the sonic program to work so gave up on Nero.
I wonder if I could use MyDvd to trancode & Nero to burn it once it's in a DVD file format. Would the quality be that much better?

Sorry, I apologize, I meant use Nero Burning Rom only for the burnings.

OK, so, can I assume the quality it much better using the nero buring program? I mean, the Dvd's I burned so far have played in all my players so I'm lothe to add another step into the process unless there's a clear advantage.  I've looked at all the quality diagrams but frankly haven't been able to make much sence of them yet.

Nero is the most reliable recording software in my opinion.

"...looked at all the quality diagrams ...". If you need anything to ask go ahead.

Oh, I believe you. I feel at times a bit like your avatar using the MyDvd program.  But I simply could not get the .tivo files into Nero.
I'll get to looking at the comparison data and ask questions once I have a good one.  At this point it's all confusing & I'm simply glad to have a system that works.  The speed of  the NEC was a little slow compaired to my old Samsung which is in the shop so I'm real glad to hear the TY's will burn at 16x.

The speed of the NEC is much depending on the inserted media.
