What boggles me for some time now is, if dvd mediatypes only work
in a dvd-burner, if they possess a mediacode, i.e. manufacturer id.
Are there dvd-media without such an id which still work in burners ? Is it mandatory for a burner to have the id in its firmware, or does a burner check for itself if the inserted media can be used for the burning process (e.g. by checking media-surface etc.) ?
Does the mediacode contain essential information, without a burner can't use the media (i.e. no mediacode -> no burning ?) ?

Mediacode is esential for most burners.
If the media is not listed in the firmware then the NEC N-1300 will not write it.
It is known that TDK and Maxell media codes were pirated by companies like Princo.
