is there a way to force a dvd-rw drive (lg 4163b to be specific) to burn 4x cd-rw media at 8,16 or 24x? I'm really vexed by the fact that I have a powerful drive and I cannot use it at its full potential since I still have many cd-rw discs around. I want to be able tu burn them faster, there must be a way.

Fortunately you cannot force your drive to overspeed 4x CD-RW media to higher speeds. If you could force your drive to do this, then at best you wouldn't be able to read the CD afterwards, but more than likely the re-writable layer of the disc would be permanently damaged.

Buy some Ultra-Speed 16-24x CD-RW media instead!

thanks for the info. I think its unfortunately, not fortunately. That's too bad, I have plenty of 4x cdrw's around and wouldnt want to throw them away. I wonder what is it that physically allows the rw media to be burned faster. I've seen nero automatically locks the speed at which i can burn them and there is no alternative whatsoever. I thought Nero was doing something wrong. Please recommend me some good rw ultra-speed media. I need it to be quite resistant since i handle those discs a lot.  BTW, i must say the same for dvd rw media. Recommend me some ultra-fast dvd rw media please. Im tired of burning rw media at 4x, it really sucks!

If the drive's firmware supports a disc for a specific speed there's no way, with the LG, to change it. Get the latest firmware, if the speed is the same then you'll have to get different media.

Hacked firmwares for NEC and LiteOn burners can do something similar but I personaly trust the certified speeds.

No I really meant "fortunately", as in "fortunately the drive won't allow you to permanently damage the re-writable discs"!

I use Verbatim DataLifePlus 16-24x Ultra-Speed CD-RW 700MB. In fact I have never seen any other manufacturer of Ultra-Speed CD-RW except Verbatim. These discs are as resistant as other CD-R media but not especially so. Buy some extra!

Your LG GS-4163B is capable of burning DVD+RW media at 8x and DVD-RW media at 6x, but just like CD-RW you can ONLY do this on media that support it. Such media is currently very hard or nearly impossible to find in stores, so you will probably have to wait a while.
