I'm hoping someone can help me with this, I have a film broken up into 3 .avi files, i'd like to convert them to a filetype that can be read by a standalone DVD player and burn them to DVD. What software should I use and how should I go about it?

At the moment I have the following Software

Nero
DVDShrink
Alcohol 120%
ISOBuster

All help appreciated

The format you want is the DVD-Video, where there is a VIDEO_TS foldr in which all the data are included.

For convert your files from AVI to DVD I think UleadMovie Creator 3 can help you.

Thanks for the advice, I got Ulead MovieFactory 3 Disc Creator (is this the one you meant?) and gave it a go. I managed to burn my first .mpg to DVD format without any hassle, and it played fine on an x-box.

However, I tried two of my .avi files and the software came up with an error box stating that they were not accessible. I selected them again and clicked on the info button and noticed in the properties that the video compression info was "not accessible", this was the case for both files. This was despite the file playing in the preview box at the bottom.

Any idea what the problem is and how I can go about fixing it?

additional info: I toyed around with the Ulead software and selected DVD-VR format (I'm not familiar with this term) and found that it would let me select the 2 .avi files that I was having problems with. However, it wanted to convert a 700MB .avi to almost 7GB, too much for my single layer disks. Is this common? and what is DVD-VR (with the R underlined) format?

Ok, looks like were drawing a blank on this, perhaps there's not many other people using Ulead MovieFactory software. So far I can use it to convert .mpg's to DVD which is something I suppose.

Can anyone else suggest any software for converting .avi files to DVD format?

Convert them to DVD format and create your Title Set then use DVD2ONE, DVD95COPY, DVDSHRINK to compress it to a single layer DVD size

My problem is that I cant covert the files to DVD format.

The Ulead software will only allow copies to disc and not to the HDD, i've also tinkered with other settings such as reducing the quality of the copy, which reduced the output file size considerably (down to 3GB) but it still would'nt allow me to burn the file for some unexplained reason.

If you could suggest some alternative software that would be ideal.

Ok I used Nero Vision Express 2, it encoded one of my files, but when I went to burn it to disk it said there was not enough space. I then exported the file in the hope that I could use DVD Shrink to compress the files and burn to disk. However i'm not sure what to do after the export, Flash mentioned creating a Title Set, how do I go about this?

I've included a picture of the files that Vision Express 2 created after exporting, these were found in the exported video folder. I'm worried that the Exported Audio folder was empty, is this normal?

You have hidden the file extentions & file sizes in your sxreen shot
Can the exported files be played & can you hear the audio track?
They still need mastering into a Video Title Set to create a DVD Video. Try  TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6

Ok, I played the files back and the sound is clear. The blade_export and blade_export1 files are 1.89GB each, the blade_export2 file is 227MB and only has the credits. When I clicked properties the files were called Nero Showtime files

I'll checkout that TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 software and see how I get on.

Man, I did'nt expect this to be such a lengthy process, i'd probably quicker getting some Dual Layer disks lol.

Just one more thing, I've just booted up Ulead Movie Creator and loaded the three blade export files in. Ulead seems willing to burn to disk, should I give it a try?

Ok, it looks like i've finally managed to get a working copy of the file, however the quality is quite poor, often quite a lot of blocky (pixelated?) dark areas

Here's the process I went through to burn the file

File Details
700MB
Video Compression - Xvid (sorry thought it was an .avi)
Bit Rate - 96kbps
Data Rate 110kbps
Frames/second - 25
Video Sample size - 24bit

Firstly, I ran the file through Nero Vision Express 2 and exported it to a folder on my hard drive.
Then I ran 2 of the 3 exported files (the third contained only the credits) through TempGenc DVD Author
With these files I then encoded and burnt through DVD Shrink 3.2

Is there anything I should have done different? also does the fact the file was an Xvid rather than .avi make any difference?

I use DVD Santa for this, it's "SLOW" but it's sure, and the quality is superb.
