I think I decipher most of it. No, there is no preference to set what you are asking. The old registry hack does not work. But I see that Nero works, as I inserted a Media that I know only writes at 16X, and selected 44X Burn speed. Nero started the compilation, then said "Switching Write Speed to 16X Due To Media"

So I would say that the speed is working fine.

Sometimes I found it funny to see even mods to find something "new" features. I've experienced that exactly same feature of "Nero switches speed while burning" sometimes. If you're using bad or low rated media, you may even see multiple messages of Nero switching to lower speeds.

First time I experienced this was with media which was rated at 40x, but finally burned at 16x. As that CD was quite well readable with old CD-drive I made it for, I paid no attention to that feature afterwards... but it was interesting to see!

Edit: LA, your sig is like made for me!

Are you guys referring to the registry entry mentioned in this thread, http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7418 ?? I just tried it with Nero 6 and it reports my burn speed as 40x from start to finish... Yes, that's what I set it at (as a "max"), but I KNOW it didn't burn that fast.

Are you suggesting that Nero 6 reports the "true" speed on it's own, without this registry key ?? I don't believe it does.

That wasn't a new feature, all the versions of Nero that I have been using have been switching and showing the speed changes for quite some time.

I've always seen it report whatever speed you chose on the "Burn" tab. Only after I added the registry entry did it show "actual" speed. It would show varying speeds as it burned...

Why do *your* versions show this ?? Even the thread I mentioned above suggests it's not the default.

I know what you're talking about... I wasn't really refering to that... I was merely stating that Nero reported switching speeds, due to media. I understand some like to watch the hack to see progressing speeds, some drives start slow, and progress....
