Well, I've come across a MAJOR oddity today! This Memorex media is FULL of inconsistancies that make me wonder if it is possibly counterfeit???

The media comes in a full sized Jewel case, with two inserts (front and back) shrinkwrapped closed. The front insert is a dark shade of blue, and claims the media is a 48x certified multispeed CD-R. The back insert is a dark shade of purple (quite different from the front) and it claims the media is compatible with 1x, 2x, 4x, 6x, 8x, and 16x. The media itself was unbranded...which I've NEVER seen from a memorex disc before! and it *looked* at first glance to be Princo Media, however the ATIP says LeadData.

MInfo 1.4 reports:
LITE-ON LTR-48125W
Drive Type = CD-RW
Disc Type = CDR
Lead In = 97:26:54
Lead Out = 79:59:74
Nominal = 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f/LBA:359849)
Manufacturer = Lead Data Inc.
Cur. Speed = Wrt(32X),Rd(12X)

Notice the speed is NOT 48x...

The Serial Numbers are:
"Holographic" outer hub: M5-ADU
Inner Hub: M21060802Y

so what are people's opinions? should I contact memorex and ask if this stuff's legitimat?

sounds fishy to me. all the memorexes i've seen since 16x have had the purple graphics, and like you, have never seen an unbranded memorex disc.

are you buying your media from those dodgy chinese shops again :-)?

for tests I'll buy media from anywhere, for my personal use I'm a little more picky

and it's the same "everything for a dollar store" that I showed you in metrotown. They have Legit Memorex there too.

I wonder if Mark from Memorex can point me to who I should be reporting to[?]

EDIT: Let's hope he still checks his e-mail

Memorex and Lead Data that's a quite weird combination.
Memorex has used many manufacturers (MPO,TY,Ritek,PRodisc,CMC)
but as far as my info goes no Lead data.
But it's getting more weird. the atip you post is an atip code which can be used by Leaddata, because it's in there range.
According to my info however no disc has spotted befor with these atip code. That's quite strange.
So first guess is that the disc's aren't even made by Leaddata.
Since also numbers fail. But with numberred media it's allways a question who numbers what. Some brands put there own Inner Hub nummers in it. This explains the 2 different codes sometimes spotted on some disc's.)

So I don't think it's leaddata.
Next question is it Memorex ?
Hmm that change is quite small to.
Unbranded & the inconsistancies on the box - That's not a thing you expect from Memorex.
So let's wait what Mark has to say.
(Remember Memorex has a quite good name for cd-r these days. Since brands get more and more important in the cd-r bussiness. There's a big change that brands are being counterfeit these days and not just atip codes)

Well, if it is indeed counterfeit, I'm sure Memorex will be interested in this discovery! Hopefully we'll get a response soon

If it's legit then I wonder.
A Is it something new ?
B Is it some B categorie media (Like Philips has done in the past)
C Is it some experiment which never should have gone up to the market in the first place.

I just called the Memorex branch in Ontario and they have confirmed that this is indeed not Memorex. They do not use LeadData discs, and they don't have an account with the dollar store I purchased it from. They ARE familiar with the dollar store chain that I bought it from (since it has several locations in Ontario as well) and they are looking into the matter. They have my e-mail address and HOPEFULLY will contact me at some point if they do/learn something.

Get this, they told me to throw it out [:p]

There was recently a 60 minutes special here in the US on the Dollar Stores having fake products in them, guess this falls into the same category.

I've only got one piece of media, but I can do a test on it if people are interested. I won't make a review on one piece though.

EDIT:

Okay, I burned the Memorex CD-R with 76:25:69 of VCD Data (yeah, I know I should have done a standard ISO, but I needed this VCD burned anyways...)

Here are the results of my scans:
Tested @32x (maximum speed for VCDs)
C1 Max: 103
C1 Total: 65048
C1 Average: 15.858
C2 Max: 0
C2 Total: 0
C2 Average: 0

Tested @8x
C1 Max: 32
C1 Total: 13607
C1 Average: 3.035
C2 Max: 0
C2 Total: 0
C2 Average: 0

All burning and testing was done on my LiteON 40125S running the 48125W firmware version VS0D (currently the latest firmware).
