After replacing the cd-burner with the NEC ND-6500A DVD-drive on my ASUS A2500H laptop, the system does not startup due to a "Boot disk failure". When I take a look in the BIOS, the harddrive has disappeared! Without the NEC or with the old cd-drive, all is fine again...
Anyone knows about this problem?
I've read about the firmware, reverse-ata and other difficult things... maybe the NEC should be flashed? But is that possible without an OS the use the flash-utility?

You have to check with ASUS, if you need to install the drive as Reversed ATA or not, if yes, you have to use the special package we host

I have one DVD writer NEC ND-6500A, Firmware version 4.60, and I put it inside the Dell C600 laptop CD bay last night.
However, when was booting, BIOS tells the BIOS can't detect the device, and give me three chioces:- power off and recheck for the tight connection; restart computer to let system detect again; ignor the device detection. But it can never be detected and pass the BIOS.
Funny, If i remove it and restart and computer running in the Win XP Sp1, then I insert the DVD Writer, It can be detected and it works, but the work speed is absloultly too low.

Anyone can help?

Ok, went back to the shop, tried a Toshiba SD-R6472B, and had the same problem. I'm afraid I'll have to go for an external drive....
Asked my collegues at work (an IT company) and they never had heard of this problem.
O, yes, and the bios does detect the dvd-drive, but not the harddisk.
Going to ask asus about this problem and I'll let you all know if they tell me somethin I don't already know...

i dont' know if is a newer firmware update for the ASUS laptop...

Well, I know. The bios uses the latest version....
Contacted Asus, but they do not seem to be very helpful.
Thinking of buying the LaCie: http://www.lacie.com/nl/products/product.htm?id=10031 Unfortunately it' external.
