Problems getting APEX to play burned DVD's

Hi, I'm pretty new to all of this, so I appreciate all the help you guys can provide.

I went to fry's and bought some HiVal DVD+R media.. DVD Identifier shows that the following:

I've been trying to change the booktype to DVD-ROM without success. I just changed firmware to
2FC.bin (Official Firmware Upgrade, Supports DVD+R/+R9 DVD-ROM Bitsetting)
and tried to set the BookType using NECWinFlash. When I was using 2.18, I would click "Booktype" and the application would say "This operation is not allowed" or something to that effect. With the MadDog, have the following happen:

I click on DVD+R SL and change the setting from "Factory default (active) " to dvd-rom.
Then I click "Apply"
A Popup box appears and says "Booktype(s) Changed."
But the DVD+R SL combo box says Factory default (active) again.

Can someone help???
