can anyone recommend a brand of cdr that is best for backing up PSX games?

I'm not sure that there is a "best brand" for PSX backups...

Personally, I like to use generic Prodisc and Ritek media because it is unbranded and therefore easy to make a nice label for, and the quality is well within the amount needed for a PSX

Smartbuy is the brand used by Prodisc, but the newer Prodisc looks like it has problems. The 32x and 24x stuff is fine if you can find it though. Ritek media can be found in some 48x TDK media, most if not all Maxell 40x media (not Maxell Pro), and their housebrand Ri-Data, which is VERY difficult to find in most places.

don't forget you need a mod-chip, and must own legal original copies of the games you intend to backup.

If you got an old burner (<24x) our the YAMAHA CRW-F1 then the best option is Mitsubishi/Verbatim Metal Azo/Yamaha disc t@t2 media. Now burn at 1-8x for the best result.
However newer burners seem to be more and more incopatible with the old Metal AZO media.
Prodisc (specially the Black) media seems also a nice option and is better compatible with modern burners(24x<)

I have 40x (or it might be 48x) Media branded Memorex and eProformance manufactured by Prodisc - Error rate is very good and very similar for the both of them. (C1 Max was ~25 and C1 Average ~<2)

My Lite-on prefers Ritek / TY though (but Prodisc is very very cheap here in the UK)... and my PSX doesn't care less

Beware Ritek Black bottomed CD-Rs! I've had MANY problems with them, and contacted Ritek USA personally over it!
