When HL2 come out i buy silver pack, install it and play it, finish it WITHOUT PROBLEM. my spec at this timespec that is pertinant for game) P4 1.7 512 ram Radeon 9800Pro 128MB win XP (NO SP2) MOBO = 4X Yesterday i get my new computor, i installed normal stuff, and installed STEAM, and all other game. i wanted to replay HL2 with better graph fps etc. but at some point(random) my screen, yes like some of you, become black and i must reboot. it is same for CS S. for now i dont know about other game but i will try. MY PRESENT SPEC: AMD64 1GIG RAM Radeon 9800Pro 128MB(SAME CARD) Win XP WITH SP2 MOBO = 8X So i use the same card. and i played HL2 without any probleme befor and now this.... ALL DRIVER are the lastest one. DX 9.0c installed. So for now i think it is a overheated problem. it is the more LOGIC reason why this can be happen. so did the fact that it is a 8X now can help to overheat , if i change it for 4X(in bios setting IF IT IS POSSIBLE) will help to resolve this. i thin to buy 2 fan for inside the box too so DID ANY ONE have try to get an answer from ATI and did anyone have resolve this probleme WITHOUT ANY HARD WARE STUFF, so this may tell that is NOT an HW problem i will post a message too ATI and see if they may help. i post same msg to Valve STEAM forum.

Although this might not solve your problem, what about the drivers that came with your card? Sometimes those are better. What about the resolution? Is it to high for your screen? What is your screen?

Hello Hankey and others...[;)] I would just like to say that I've played HL2 on my P4-2.4,1Gb ram,radeon 9700pro@agp8x,and winxp sp2, and there we no problems at all. So...Your configuration shouldnt be problematic here...and I also think changing agp from 8x to 4x wouldnt make any difference (btw...do You run ATI's Radeon? With heatsinks on ram? or some of the first samples without passive ram coolers on it? - because only in this case there could be problems with overheating) But if You'd like to change to 4x anyway...just go to control panel,click display, then settings,advanced, and SmartGart...then change to 4x...and click apply...(maybe You would need to restart...I am not sure about that)...and thats it...[;)] Anyway...I did a little research...and found that some people said that there is some problem in the original HL2 and that Valve admitted there is an error and that patch will be released soon(post dated 24.12.2004)...also that game crashes at random after 2-20 minutes of playing it...and that it also doesnt happen to everybody (didnt happen to me - so I am living proof that this is real[:)])...also...that it could happen if You have OCed machine (but I guess You havent overclocked it yet[;)])...and so on.... So...there are many many posts in that particular forum...so I believe You could find even more useful informations there...just click HERE and check it out....[;)] Well...that would be all for now...let us know later if You managed to fix the problem...or....shall I do a Complete-Expert-Ultra-Superb-Research about this...[8D][:D] Enjoy![;)] p.s.Just remembered...at what details do You run the game?...in case You are running with some ultra details[:)]....try lowering everything to default...[;)] Byeeeeeeeeee

i use setting that is recomanded for the game by the game. but remeber that i played HL2 befor on my other computor with SAME VID card and was no problem

So have You read those forum posts already? Maybe You could get more info about Your problem there...or at least some clue...[;)] So there is just black screen...and game stops...thats all...nothing else? there is no message displayed or anything? btw...have You tried to see if there is some new patch available?

Hi y'all :) ... It has been noted(by me that is) that some settings do not work as they should after a hardware upgrade( most of them after a mobo upgrade and CPU) it has to do with some relly "fine" tuning... I suppose u didn't format ur HD after the upgrade...Well this is a longshot, but m,aybe if u did just that, then u should have no problems what so ever. But propably there is a faster, easier solution to your prob... So don't rush into this.. :)

it was a new HD and it was formated and winshit reinstalled. for now i wait what i will see for solution and reason(theoric) and by next week i will reinstall all driver and see.... tanks for help

Have you tried the Omega Drivers? www.omegadrivers.net Even if this doesn't fix your problem, still use them. [:D] They are awesome!

Which Power supply do you use? Have you upgraded it too, or it's the same old one you used quth the P4 1,7 ??? Most of the symptoms seems to be power supply-related... Please tell us the BRAND od the PowerS. , the WATTage, and the "combined output" (look at specifications on the PowerS. Bye.

no it is new power supply 420W. but i have resolved my problem..... i put my AGP to 4X instead of 8X and that work.... i dont know why, but it is only SOURCE engine that do that.

Know that there's no actual difference between 4x and 8x so you shouldn't worry about that now.[8\|]
