MP3Mogul -> Plextor 716A Burn (1/19/2005 6:36:43 AM)

This is my first burn with my new Plextor 716A drive, TLA 0203, firmware 1.03. As you can see below, I am "EXTREMELY" pleased with the results, it looks beautiful!

SithTracy -> RE: Plextor 716A Burn (1/19/2005 7:11:01 AM)

I ordered one and will move my NEC ND-3500A to my wife’s PC. I have always had good luck with Plextor. I thought about the BENQ drive, but NewEgg doesn’t' have them anymore and all my other vendors are crazy on shipping costs (a little pet peeve of mine).

Only reason for going with it is the supported booktype feature in the product. Never thought I would need it, but having my folks out of the state and sending them xmas videos on DVD+R wasn't working. Their player wouldn't play it and their retired and "used to" their current DVD player.

Don't get me wrong the NEC is a good drive. I am just not comfortable using hacked firmware. I am expecting good results too from this Plextor drive.

So Mate you did bought the 716.[:)]

I wonder when those spikes will be disapear from Mediatek chipsets.

MP3Mogul -> RE: Plextor 716A Burn (1/19/2005 12:53:51 PM)

LOL, not sure, but it's definately the chipset. PlexToolsPro removes the spike so you can't see it at all.

MP3Mogul -> RE: Plextor 716A Burn (1/19/2005 12:55:15 PM)

Okay, returned from best buy. Purchased 200 Fuji 8x DVD+R's (YUDEN0000) for about 29 cents a piece (very good price) with rebates.

Below is a full burn, Plextor 716A TLA 0203 firm 1.03 writing this 8X disc at 16x:

I LOVE this drive! I'm now taking the LiteOn's that I have and giving them away to my enemies.....! Glad I returned the BenQ, the quality wasn't this good, even with hacked firmware! [:D][;)]

emperor -> RE: Plextor 716A Burn (1/19/2005 4:32:51 PM)

LiteON quality is a no-go situation, BenQ/Plextor are much better drives

MP3Mogul -> RE: Plextor 716A Burn (1/19/2005 5:40:57 PM)

I agree Emperor!

I sent LiteOn an email with the scans above from the Plextor, along with some trash scans from the 1633s and asked then when they are going to improve the writing quality, I will post their response, if they do respond.

emperor -> RE: Plextor 716A Burn (1/20/2005 9:07:36 AM)

I wouldn't bet much on their response, LiteON is making big steps backwards in terms of quality and features...

Billiz -> RE: Plextor 716A Burn (1/20/2005 10:14:04 AM)

I have seen the review of plextor 716A on this site and the result is not impresive.How could be your plextor so goog with the results above.And what is the number TLA?

emperor -> RE: Plextor 716A Burn (1/20/2005 4:50:23 PM)

Billiz, it could be the different testing method, what looks OK at a LiteON burner, might look bad at a Plextor burner and via versa...[8D]

MP3Mogul -> RE: Plextor 716A Burn (1/20/2005 4:59:04 PM)

Combination of firmware, 1.03 and Drive TLA 0203. The results have been fantastic on all except one media that I have tested. Results are the same, when tested with PlexToolsPro as well... beautiful!

Clint -> RE: Plextor 716A Burn (1/20/2005 5:29:05 PM)

Should try the new 1j04 firmware (beta release -R DL), should now write 'properly' at 16X, not at 14X 'ish' like versions =<1.03. Some SUM8/SUM1 scans with PlexTools would be better though. Just out of curiosity, what is the place of manufacture for your unit?

MP3Mogul -> RE: Plextor 716A Burn (1/20/2005 5:46:45 PM)

Clint, it was manufactured in Japan.... Can I flash the firmware back if I don't like it? This is my first Plexwriter so I don't know if I can flash it back and forth or not...

I'll post a new scan with beta firmware if I can flash it back and forth.

MP3Mogul -> RE: Plextor 716A Burn (1/20/2005 9:23:09 PM)

Clint: Just for you!

Media: Fuji 8X (Burned at 16X) YUDEN0000:

MP3Mogul -> RE: Plextor 716A Burn (1/20/2005 9:24:23 PM)

Burns above were done with Plextor 716A Firmware 1j04 (Beta) at 16X on 8X media.

As you can see, it doesn't look like you can possibly get a better burn.... This Plexwriter is truly "amazing"
