rjl24 -> is my back up taking too long?? (12/30/2004 8:06:25 AM)

have HP pavilion notebook,
celeron 1.8 Ghz,
512 mb ram,
40 gb HD,
notebook with
toshiba sdr 2312 dvd rom, using for reading dvd,
and external type NEC 3500 ag (usb) for burning dvd,
with 2.f9 firmware connected temporarily
with an usb 1.0 connection.

going to usb 2.0 pcmcia card for nec 3500 next week.

nero 6 (most current)
and dvd shrink (ver 3.17 or 3.2)
average 2 1/2 hours - 150 minutes-
per backup to either 4 or 8x blank - or + dvd.

quality of copies so far is excellent.

in device manager for IDE controllers, advanced, transfer mode for 'primary' controller, device '0' have 'dma' set current transfer mode to 'ultra 5 dma mode'
and device '1' reads: auto detection , dma if available, curent transfer mode: not available.

while secondary controller device setting reads:
for '0': 'multi word DMA mode 2'
and for '1' auto detection, DMA if available, current transfer mode: not available.

please advise what i can do to speed up backup/ burning/ copying.

thanks in advance,
robert

In my opinion the time should be a little increased. I used to do the same task with a P4 2.4 and 512RAM at 20min. So I estimate that the difference is huge.

What about your HD? Exept from the size?

am unsure what you mean by " what about your HD?"

HDD is hitachi dk 23ea; 40 gb
from device manager.

HDD is working fine.

it is a 40gb, with about 20 gb available.
(am getting an external 250 gb HD, soon.)

thanks,

Do you know the rpm and the buffer size?

For example my HDs work at 7200rpm and the buffer is 8MB.

will be happy to supply info on HDD.
current internal:
buffer 2 mb,
4200 rpm

installing a new external HDD soon:
250 GB,
7200 rpm, 8 mb buffer.

guess must wait and see after i install new HD.

thanks,,
robert

The usb1 is why! If your external enclosure has firewire connection try that.[;)]

thank you for your info.

will be installing usb 2.0 pcmcia card this week.

no firewire available though i was told USB 2.0 will be faster.

will advise next week.

robert
