The 2004 International Online Game Competition (IOGC), the first one of its kind in the world, will take place in Taipei on December 25 and 26, with six online games made in South Korea selected for the contest, according to the event’s host, the Taipei Hsien Computer Association (THCA), an industry organization formed by computer companies in Taipei County (Hsien) in northern Taiwan. The Korea IT Industry Promotion Agency (KIPA), a semi-official non-profit organization in South Korea, is sponsoring the event, while THCA plays host to the 2004 IOGC. There are many PC game contests held around the world, but to date there have not been any international online game contests, THCA pointed out. KIPA hopes that the 2004 IOGC can establish a global reputation and make IOGC the world’s leading online-game competition in the near future. South Korea-based online games will account for 24.5% of a global market worth US$2.732 billion in 2004, according to KIPA. In the Taiwan online game market, products from South Korea have a dominant share of 62%, the main reason for KIPA to debut IOGC in Taiwan, Taiwan-based providers of online game services noted. Although KIPA has not selected Taiwan-made online games for the 2004 IOGC, the contest is expected to boost the development of Taiwan’s online game industry, several Taiwan providers said.
