LinuxMarshall -> Linux Show Website Powered By Windows (8/10/2004 10:15:26 AM)

The website for last week's LinuxWorld 2004 in San Francisco was powered by Windows Server 2003, according to internet monitoring firm Netcraft.

The US event was designed to celebrate the best Linux applications and advance the cause of the open source operating system for businesses - but failed to use the platform itself.

Further research by Netcraft poster Rich Miller found that Linux enthusiasts are not alone in finding their 'World' running on Microsoft software: the website for the Macworld Conference & Expo is also hosted on Windows Server 2003.

The explanation for these technological contradictions is, according to Miller, that show organiser International Data Group (IDG) runs its main website on Windows 2000, while its trade show unit is hosted on Windows NT4.

"In fairness to IDG, it's hardly the only trade show operator that doesn't tailor its hosting for OS-specific events," said Miller in a posting.

He added that the website for the Wall Street on Linux show also runs on Windows Server 2003, as does the site for the Real World Linux 2004 Conference & Expo.
