LinuxMarshall -> US Army Buys Linux-based Supercomputer (8/4/2004 9:31:34 AM)

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory Major Shared Resource Center is buying a 10 teraflop supercomputer for use in development of advanced military systems.

The supercomputer will be able to do more than one trillion floating-point operations per second. Built by IBM, the new system will be the largest super computer in the military to use the Linux operating system.

With the combined supercomputer upgrades, the ARL MSRC also becomes the first and only center in the DoD's High Performance Computing Modernization Office providing greater than 10 terabytes (10,000 GB) of memory, said Charles J. Nietubicz, Director of the ARL MSRC.

The new system is part of Technology Insertion 2004, an effort to update DoD's high performance computing capabilities.

Researchers will use the system as at ARL MSRC, located in Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., to do physics based modeling and weapon system simulation. They will also explore chemical interactions, develop new composite materials and analyze sensors and experimental data.
