actc -> Acer Asipre pc Dvd Rw not working (1/8/2008 5:29:32 PM)

i have an acer aspire pc with HL-DT-ST (HITACHI-LG):DVD-RW_GSA-H11N drive . The tech has been out to it and told my partner that this pc can not play music play dvd or even be used to install programs . Its complete hogwash and although he changed the drive it still refuses to see any info . Can any suggest what can be wrong i have substituted the drive for a new one by still windows xp refuses to see it ??? at my wits end any else has a fix please
