lmh235 -> cd/rw/dvd drive not recognized (2/24/2007 7:16:33 PM)
I have a toshiba laptop with windows xp. I installed a new cd/rw/dvd player the same part number as my old one that quit working. I also have a smart media slot on the computer. After installing the drive my smart media slot no longer works and the computer does not recognize that there is a cd drive. In my computer under D is listed removable disk drive. In the device manager the hard drive is listed and also Toshiba sm Host Driver SCSI Disk Device. I have checked a lot of the forums but could not find any that were like the problem I am having. Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? The only way I can open the drive is manually. lmh

Delete the IDE channels that the drive(s) are on, and then reboot and let windows reinstall them.

Thanks for the info. I tried what you suggested about removing the IDE channels and re-installing them and my smart media is now working but my computer is still not recognizing my cd/rw/dvd drive. This is my first time on a forum so I don't know if I am doing this right.

Does the drive you installed have any jumpers on it? Perhaps it needs to be jumped as a master or slave... what was the old one set to? If there is no jumpers, perhaps it is something you set through the BIOS... Did you try to google your problem?

There are no jumpers to set and I don't think there is anything to set in the bios which I can't get to. I think I have searched just about all the forums and couldn't find any answer that fit my problem.
