Due to Sun's licensing terms for Java it has been difficult for distributors to bundle Java with operating systems. Therefore Java was typically downloaded separately when it was needed. Now there have been reports that Sun Microsystems will announce a change in Java licensing that will make it easier to include the Java runtime environment with Linux and other Open Source operating systems. So, hopefully in the near future Java software will run right "out of the box" without the need for developers to redistribute a Java run time system, or users having to download and install it.
