neptun -> NEC 3540 to 4550 or 4551 conversion. (11/24/2005 1:32:33 PM)
I saw that NEC 4551 and 4550 use the same chipset as NEC 3540.Is it possible to flash my NEC 3540 with firmware for 4550 or 4551 and in this way transform my NEC 3540 in NEC 4550 or 4551?It would be great to unlock DVD-RAM support and better speeds.

I don't think the chipset is the same, or the specs.[:)]

This is from the review of NEC 4551 posted on CDRInfo: The drive uses the same NEC D6364 chipset that is found in the previous model, the ND 3540, which is known for its good burning quality. The specific chipset can also be found in Pioneer's latest burners, the DVR-110 and DVR-110D.
So is it possible to convert NEC 3540 to 4550 or 4551?

There may be an error in that review. The 3550/3551 share the same hardware as the 4550/4551. Crossflashing is possible, but the author of the required converter software is not ready to release it.
