Over at cdfreaks - CDspeed tested with a beta/unreleased firmware - NEC3500 / 2.R8
Without scan capability, the NEC 3500 was a good drive - with that capability added, Liteon should be looking VERY worried.
The fact that it's CDspeed (Nero bundled + freeware) that is pushing the pace on this one, is another plus - the feature wouldn't be as attractive if it relied on a certain Shareware/Adware/Timedware like Pioneer scanning does.
